The abolishment of most hard buttons in the cabin is not necessarily a good thing trying to change the climate control via the touch screen while on the move is hit-and-miss.Īnd in conclusion Yes, in a straight swap you’d have the all-wheel drive 2-litre (which we also drove), but this is all the car many people will need for the city, and it’s better than you might imagine on the open road. For over 45 years, AGMC has delivered premium automotive products and services to its customers as the exclusive importer for BMW Group vehicles and Motorrad with 6 locations spread across Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. That’s the future, though admittedly in the meantime, it’s $30K dearer and compromised (it’s based on the petrol car). Because there is an EV version, the iX1, on offer. Why wouldn’t you? It’s an SUV and a three-cylinder, so it’s not exactly the Ultimate Driving Machine. The big question remains: Why would you when EVs are the future? However, the wireless phone mirroring works so well (giving nav instructions on the excellent head-up display, for example), many will use Apple or Google for at least some of these functions. There’s a three-year subscription to BMW ConnectedDrive included, with map updates, and traffic, news, and weather info. Clever tech includes a digital key for up to five users (via smartphone), adaptive LED headlights, and a built-in dashcam-style recorder. The classy interior ekes out a surprising amount of space (the car is 4500mm long), including for rear seat passengers. ![]() ![]() The cabin is classy and comfortable with all mod cons including a heads-up display. The equipment levels are high (not something BMW has always been known for) and almost everything works superbly. In this three-cylinder form it is very frugal, if not exactly fast (9 seconds 0-100 km/h). There’s sharp steering and our car had a plush ride too despite the bigger wheels. Why would you want it? Because it is a little (well, little-ish) car that feels like a big one in terms of refinement, solidity and road manners. If you need a bigger petrol engine, the dearer (indeed much dearer) xDrive20i M Sport has a four-cylinder 2-litre turbo, as well as all-wheel drive. What makes it go? A turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot engine, sending a modest 115 kW and 230 Nm to the front wheels via seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The BMW X1 sDrive 18i is a smallish SUV with sharp steering and a comfortable ride. Our car had optional wheels (19-inch V-spoke alloys at $2000 a set) plus a $4000 “enhancement package” bundling disparate things such as a glass roof and metallic paint with a better sound system and upgraded driving assistance features. What does it cost? It starts at $53,900 (plus on-road costs). Fortunately, it is also roomier and better equipped. As is almost always the way, it is bigger and dearer than the car it replaces. What is it? The BMW X1 sDrive18i is the entry version of the all-new third generation of Benz’s smallest SUV. ![]()
